Technician Michael Anderle monitors computer displays as Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard participates in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) test at the MRI facility in the Waisman Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on June 4, 2008. Ricard is a longtime participant in an ongoing research study led by Richard J. Davidson that monitors a subject’s brain activity and the impact of meditation on pain regulation. Davidson is director of the Waisman Lab for Brain Imaging and Behavior (WLBIB) and the William James and Vilas Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry.
