Phlebotomist/Phlebotomy Technicians (PBT)

• Students should take a general high school curriculum.
• Helpful high school courses would include anatomy & physiology, math, Health and Fitness, and Medical Terminology.
• Shadowing a Phlebotomist is strongly recommended.

• Technical Diploma/Certificate programs offered at many Technical Colleges.
• Northcentral Technical College (NTC) has an 8-9-credit Technical Certificate program that includes a 100-hour clinical experience. Program is NAACLS accredited.
• Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) affiliated with Marshfield Labs has a Technical Diploma program offered at the Marshfield and Stevens Point campuses. The program is a 14-credit preparatory semester at MSTC including Applied Microsoft Office for Health, Medical Terminology, Lab Techniques, Human Body in Health and Disease, and Medical Law. This is followed by a 3-credit theory course and a 5-credit practicum at area healthcare agencies. NAACLS accredited.
• Many enroll in the Associate Degree (2-yr) Clinical Laboratory Technician and supplement with the Phlebotomy Certificate.

Affiliated Clinical Laboratory Programs

Marshfield Labs, Marshfield

• Completion of accredited Phlebotomy program AND successful completion of the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) examination.
• To be eligible for the ASCP examination, one must satisfy requirements one of six routes.
• ONE, high school graduation (or equivalent) AND completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) approved phlebotomy program within the last 5 years.
• Or TWO, high school graduation (or equivalent) AND completion of an acceptable two-part formal structured phlebotomy program in the US, Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO) accredited laboratory within the last 5 years. The two-part program, to be arranged by program director, must consist of specific classroom training AND 100 clock hours of specific lab experience.
• Or THREE, high school graduation (or equivalent) AND completion of one year full time acceptable experience as a phlebotomy technician in a CLIA regulated lab within the last 5 years. Must have specific procedure experience.
• Or FOUR, high school graduation (or equivalent) AND successful completion of RN, LPN or other allied health professional/occupational education which includes phlebotomy training and orientation in a CLIA regulated, accredited laboratory with a minimum performance of 100 successful unaided blood collections including venipunctures and skin punctures.
• Or FIVE, MT(ASCP) or MLT(ASCP) certification.
• Or SIX, DPT(ASCP) certification AND a minimum performance of 100 successful unaided blood collections including venipunctures and skin punctures.
